Government Of Canada 2023 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Up to $70,000) Apply Now!

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program offers support to the top postdoctoral candidates throughout the world who will significantly advance the nation’s social, economic, and scientific advancement.

Each year, 70 fellowships are given out. There are about 140 awards available at any given moment. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) each get an equal number of fellowships.

Aim and Benefits of the Government of Canada Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program aims to: 

Draw in and keep elite postdoctoral talent from both domestic and foreign sources; foster their leadership capacity; and prepare them for success as the next generation of research leaders.

Benefits

The annual fellowship value is $70,000 (taxable). No additional funding is given for travel or study.

Requirements for Government of Canada Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Qualification

  • Foreign nationals, Canadian citizens, and permanent residents of Canada are all eligible to apply as long as they fulfil the requirements listed below:
  • Only Canadian institutions are permitted to host recipients of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  • The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship may only be held in a Canadian institution by candidates who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who earned their PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a foreign university.
  • Candidates who hold a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree from a Canadian university and who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada may hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship in either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.
  • Before the commencement date of their award, candidates for the 2023–24 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships must meet or have met all requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree between September 15, 2020, and September 30, 2024 (inclusive).
  • Applicants who at the time of application have not completed all criteria for their degree must provide proof by October 15, 2024.
  • The eligibility window only applies to the most recent PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree for applicants who have earned more than one of these degrees.

How to Apply 

Applicants are required to create and submit applications. 

The applicant must make sure the application is accurate and comprehensive. This involves making sure that all paperwork from the host university and referee evaluations have been submitted.
