The WTO Essay has issued a call for submissions from young economics students who wish to be considered for the WTO Essay Award for Young Economists in 2023. With this prize, the WTO and academic communities will be better connected, and high-quality research on trade policy and global trade cooperation will be encouraged. By June 2, 2023, the essays need to be turned in.
The WTO Essay Award 2023 for Young Economists was established in 2009 and is given annually. A reward of CHF 5,000 is given along with the recognition. Prizes for coauthored articles will be distributed equally among the authors.
Papers should discuss issues with international trade cooperation and trade policy. Additionally, the author(s) of the essay should already hold a PhD or be working toward one. If you are over 30 years old, you must have been more than two years old when you made your doctoral defence. This obligation applies to all authors of coauthored works. The essay’s maximum word count for the prize is 15,000 words.
The European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the largest conference devoted to international trade, will hold its annual conference, during which the winning paper will be formally presented. The WTO Essay Award 2023 event will be place at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom from September 14–16, 2023. The winning author will get money to pay for the occasion.

Eligibility Criteria For The WTO Essay Award 2023-2024 UK:
- Both trade policy and international trade cooperation should be discussed in the paper.
- The PhD degree is a requirement for the author(s) of the article, or they must be working toward it.
- If older than 30 years old, you must have been older than 2 years at the time you made your PhD defence. This obligation applies to all authors of coauthored works. Additionally, the essay’s word count cannot surpass 15,000 to qualify for the prize.
- The selected essay can be included in the WTO Working Paper Series. Each author has a responsibility to put out great effort to have their work published in the journal.
WTO Essay Award 2023-2024 Application Procedure
- The entries must be sent to essay.award@wto.org by the students.
- The needed materials should be submitted in pdf format.
- Don’t forget to turn in the relevant paperwork, which will be in the form of an application.
Application Deadline:
Essays for the WTO Essay Award 2023 must be submitted by June 2, 2023. The WTO Secretariat’s Economic Research and Statistics Division is anticipated to shortlist all qualified proposals up until June 16 of 2023, and the selection committee will make its final decision on July 7, 2023.
